     In fact, an awful lot of people, including webmasters, IT professionals, and others, are in the hosting and domain reselling business. There are certainly at least “tens of thousands,” and possibly many hundreds of thousands of “web-hosting” businesses out there, most run by people who also do web development work.

     Some professionals do this “surreptitiously,” creating an apparently-separate company which they use to register and host client sites. Many do it openly, telling their clients that they own the hosting or registration company.

     Those professionals who do NOT resell web-hosting or domain-registration services frequently believe that their sole charge should be based on their time, not on reselling services at potentially inflated prices.

     In addition, some professionals choose not to resell anything other than their own services, because they recognize that over time, the level of service at most hosting and registration companies can change.

     Over the past 12 years, I’ve hosted my own and clients’ web sites on several dozen different servers (including dedicated servers, colocated servers, and many shared servers), and registered domains with many different registrars. Recently, I consolidated all my registrations to a single registrar, and I also consolidated all hosting to a single provider, but it’s likely that I’ll move some or all of this within 12 months.

     Filezilla is an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client program that allows you to upload files to your website’s server. It also supports a number of different protocols but I don’t think you need to worry about that at the moment. To connect to your site you’ll need a host name (typically your websites url) and a username and password that 123-reg should have provided you with when you joined. Although I won’t go into further detail about the program itself Filezilla provide a basic tutorial about how to get started using it at http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Using

     As for the web builder software, you do not need to purchase any software to build web pages you can simply jot down your code in a .txt file if you wanted (although I don’t recommend this as windows notepad program is terribly buggy). Two good programs you can download for free are Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus-plus.org/) and Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org/) I’d recommend starting off with Notepad++ as the latter is a heavier development environment with numerous bells and whistles to play around with that might confuse you if your just starting off.

     Development-wise I’m gathering you’ve never tried building a site before and have little or no web development experience; if this is the case I’d highly recommend getting a web developer in to build your site as learning web technologies can take a fairly long amount of time. However if you want to give learning web development a bash an authorative site for beginners would be w3schools.com.

      Let me answer your questions one by one.

      - What is the difference between them, why not both in one company?

      Web hosting is a service that offers you a web space to house your website, whereas domain name is just a locator to help people find your website. That’s why you need to register a domain name in conjunction with a web hosting service.

      For example, if you’ve registered a domain name say, XYZ.com, then by simply typing XYZ.com into my web browser, I will be able to get on your website.

      Technically speaking, domain name is connected (or pointed) to your website, so whenever people enter domain name into the browser, it’ll bring them there.

      Domain name and web hosting can both be either in the same company or different companies. Let me explain with an example.

      Company A
      - domain registration
      - web hosting 0

      Company B
      - domain registration
      - web hosting 0

      In such scenario, if you want to save cost, you’ll probably register your domain name with company B and buy web hosting with company A. But because your domain name and website will be hosted on different locations, you need to go to your company B’s account and point your domain name to company A in order to “attach” your domain name with your web space.

      Some people prefer to have both the domain name and website hosted with the same company to steer clear of domain pointing, although it’s a very simple task to perform.

      - Do I have to know what company my domain are?

      Yes, you need to know to which company your domain name belongs so that you can do the necessary domain settings to suit your needs, or perform domain pointing if you were hosting your site with another company.

      - and what Unlock?

      In your domain control panel, you’ll see a lock and unlock feature for your domain name. This is for security reason. There are horror cases where bad registrars unscrupulously transfer unlocked domain names to their own servers without the prior consent of the domain owner and the original domain registrar. They can do this without having to access your domain account. That’s why you must always lock your domain name. Only when you need to transfer your domain name to another company then should you unlock it to allow the transfer. Once transfer is over, remember to lock it again.

      - Private/public?

      You can choose to keep your personal info especially your email address from the public. That means whoever tries to find your personal info using the whois tool, they will only see your domain registrar’s info rather than your own info. This is to protect you from spammers. Private registration costs you a few bucks more.

      - Auth code?

      This code will only issue to you by your domain registrar when you need to transfer your domain name to other domain or web hosting company.

Good means reliable with great support. When you choose a web host, make sure they have excellent support. If you have a problem with your web site you want help now, not in a day or two.

      It can be confusing when choosing a web hosting company because they all look pretty much the same and they seem like they know what they are doing.       If you want a truly reliable web host with quality service, I’d strongly recommend Host Gator. It does offer a domain registration service coupled with its web hosting.

      But generally, a domain name registered with a web host costs a few bucks more per year. That’s one thing you must know.

      If you register your domain name with a domain registrar, you can get cheaper. It’s just that you need to change your dns server manually (it’s not difficult though).

      However, if quality is your main concern and you want to save yourself the hassle of manually changing dns server, and you don’t mind paying a few bucks more for the domain name when you sign up with the web hosting, then I don’t think you’ll have a problem with Host Gator.

They have the power to turn this feature off if they want you to pay for an additional hosting package for extra domains. For example: My hosting company is siteground. They don’t allow addon domains in cpanel.

      On the other hand, if you want to set both domain names to go to the same website, this is done using “parked domains”. This is almost always available with web hosts using cpanel.

      This all depends on the hosting service. Many services will try and steal your domain or hold you as a hostage.

      I use http://www.hostmonsterplus.com who provide a free domain name (they also provide free privacy if you life). If you transfer away and close your hosting account, your domain name is still owned by you, accessable, transferrable, etc.

      http://www.hostmonsterplus.com is a fully accredited domain name registrar and therefore can not cheat you out of your domain without losing their accreditation. No other good host I know can claim this.

      Other than this company, I’d be careful.
