Secure A Domain Name

Easy Access

If you’re considering getting started in e-commerce, having your own eBay store is a great way to gain experience—it’s like putting your own website up right on eBay. According to eBay University Instructor Janelle Elms (http://JanelleElms.com, http://StoresSuccessVideo.com), there are considerable advantages to starting online with an eBay store rather than an independent website:

It’s quick and easy. Launching a website involves time and preparation—you have to secure a domain name, find a host, and then design your web pages, or hire someone to do it for you. With eBay, you can literally have a store up and running in a matter of hours.

It’s cost-effective. At only a month, it’s highly affordable. And many of the marketing and optimization tools you would pay for with a stand-alone site are included for free with your eBay store. Says Elms, “The marketing opportunities are phenomenal. I’ve had clients who’ve ranked number one on MSN, Yahoo, and Google, for sixteen dollars a month.”

It produces fast results. You can spend months optimizing and advertising a traditional website before you start seeing results; but with an eBay store, you have built-in traffic from the moment you go live. With some 212 million registered users, eBay stores give you the ability to reach a significantly larger audience. And because eBay’s site is already optimized, eBay stores tend to rank higher with the major search engines than independent websites.

Excuses, Excuses
While most people realize starting an eBay store is often the simplest, most successful entry route into the world of ecommerce, many of them mistakenly believe that, for one reason or another, it wouldn’t work for them. Following are some of the more common excuses people give for not cashing in on this valuable resource AND the reasons why those excuses don’t work:

“I sell services.” This is just a simple matter of marketing. Services can easily be packaged and sold in an eBay store, and you can quickly gain significant exposure for your business.

“I have a brick and mortar store.” If you have a physical storefront, eBay stores present a great opportunity for you, not only to find buyers for merchandise that doesn’t sell well in your brick and mortar store, but also to expand your business to a much wider audience.

“I already have a stand-alone website.” Having an eBay store is a great way to market your website. By utilizing eBay’s marketing tools, you could have nothing in your eBay store and just have your business marketed to the entire world on a shoestring budget—no other place on the internet gives you that kind of opportunity.

EBay stores offer an easy learning environment when you’re beginning in online retail, and an effective means of expansion as your business grows. They work well as a complement to your existing business, or they can become your full-time income. But Elms asserts, “If you’re going to be successful online, you’re going to have to have an eBay store—they’re just that powerful!”

  7. QUESTION:
How can I secure my domain name against spammers?
I’m getting a lot of spam returned to email addresses at my domain.

I can easily turn off the catch all to hide these emails. But what I want to do is disallow spammers from using my domain.

I don’t know if there is a relay, or how to turn that off. If anyone knows how, I’d love to stop spammers from using it.

    Name server 1 ns45.1and1.co.uk
    Name server 2 ns46.1and1.co.uk
    Mail server 1 mx01.1and1.co.uk, 10
    Mail server 2 mx00.1and1.co.uk, 10
Whoah, was I unclear, spammers are using my domain! they have hijacked it, and my domain is the return address.

I want them to stop using my domain as a sending point. my domain name is in the return address

    • ANSWER:
The problem is if you “hide” your domain from “spammers” you will also be hiding it from the search engines.

Are you getting the spam from the email(s) you list on your website? Or is the spam going to the email you have listed as the administrative email on your registration? You can buy a “private” registration (about year) that will not release your contact info from Whois (the database that contains all the records of the people/companies who have registered domains).

Good luck, it appears Spam is here to stay.

  8. QUESTION:
Why do you have to pay to secure a domain name? Isn’t there a free way to do it since it’s just a name?
Why do you have to pay godaddy to secure a name, or whoever the company that is charging for this service. Once I pay a company like this, I must keep paying them to keep my website, right? Or not?

Please tell me how to secure a domain for my hopefully future business without these fees over and over! I’m a newbie at this and hope that there is a way around the big box places.

    Thank you for reading!

Please mark this question as interesting because I think more people should know this information if you know it. Thank you and I hope this helps everyone!

    • ANSWER:
You will have to pay roughly -10 a year for a domain name. Usually, you can’t get a domain name for a one-time fee. Some companies offer a “free” domain for life if you subscribe to their hosting package (which usually goes by a monthly fee). My suggestion to you is to see if GoDaddy will allow you to register a domain for multiple years at a time and go for that option. No matter what you do, you’ll still have to continue renewing the domain to hold onto it.

  9. QUESTION:
Where do I go to register a cheap domain name without hosting? I want to secure the name while its available?

I am also looking into having a ecommerce site designed. Thought I would try a freelance designer thinking I could keep the price reasonable. Any tips?

How do I secure the domain name I bought…

I plan on selling this domain name in a few months…What if someone trademarks or copyrights it after I bought it?

    • ANSWER:
What you are “buying” is a domain name registration, and as long as you renew it as needed it is NOT available to anyone else.
If you sell it, you are selling the right to use it, so long as THEY then keep the registration current as the “new owner.”

I want to register a domain name for my new site?
and am wondering if my potential web designer would prefer or require a specific host? just want to secure the name but the content for the site is some time off.

    • ANSWER:
I would suggest to let the web designer to choose the host provider with you because some hosting providers may not offer the features that he would need to build the website. In other words, the website conception is done before choosing the web host.

Although, you can buy a domain name now since it can refer to the new host later on. If you wanna save money thought wait because some webhost providers may offer a special deal providing a domain name with the webhosting service.

But if you think your domain name may get buy by someone else than buy it now, no problem with that. But wait to talk with the website designer to buy a web hosting service.

Somebody may have claimed the domain just before you. You can double check the ownership of the domain on www.whois.net or any internet site that provide whois service.

  24. QUESTION:
The domain name – how to avoid being scr*wed ???
I have spent considerable time over the last two day’s attempting to secure a domain name.
I have tried no less than six different sites, all with similar results.
Here’s the typical series of events…you are asked for the domain name you want ( in some cases your asked for as many as three “backup” names), then they (being the sellers of domains) tell you all of your desired choices are already owned, then they tell you you can buy the domain name from the owner for a ridiculous price, and for less than the standard 2 year lease term – meaning not only are you being gouged, your being gouged twice or four times in the standard two year period.
Now I have tried some ridiculous domain names, I mean total jibberish, all taken. I tried my own name, not terribly un common, but not common either, and it’s “taken”.
A google search resulted in no web pages for any of the jibberish domains I’ve requested, nor a website or page with my name. Can anyone point me to a legit host site ? PrettyPLZ

    • ANSWER:
Just be cause a web site doesn’t exidt doesn’t mean someone dowsn’t own the domain name.

Try http://www.godaddy.com I have dealt with them a long time and they are legit.

But you can research you own names by downloading SamSpade software at: http://preview.samspade.org/ssw/download.html

I check web domain names and owners there first.

  25. QUESTION:
Which domain name would get the best results?
My competitor recently secured a domain name that is getting better placement then mine. My current domain name reflects my business name while he opted strictly for search words.

I want to secure alternate forms of his domain name in order to secure some of the hits. Which of these examples would be my best choice? Keep in mind that our respective businesses are more “stumbled upon” as opposed to a deliberate destination” site so I don’t feel the .com/.net aspect is too important. IMO

    His (example only) monkeybananajungleape.COM

My choices monkeybananajungleape.NET or mix the key words up and get the .COM? apemonkeyjunglebanana.COM

I currently have a .NET site that gets good results and I would be posting this new site as a direct link to my existing only.
Given the business we are in nobody will be directly typing in our domain names but rather searching us out using key words. Chances are if they “know” my site address, they are already a customer. I am not a destination site.

  29. QUESTION:
How soon should I secure a domain without a web design?
I am trying to create a website. I have the domain name picked out. However, I am still searching for a web designer or developer. But I am curious to know should I secure my domain as soon as possible even if I don’t have the site fully developed

    • ANSWER:
Although often sold as a package, a domain name is separate to a web hosting account. When you purchase a domain name, you can set the name servers to where ever you like, so if you buy the name from company a) you can host it with company b). You just log into the account and set the nameservers. You can purchase a domain name as part of a web hosting package then just edit the home page to say “Website under construction”, or you can just purchase the name and sort out hosting later. Many Domain name providers allow you to park the domain until you set the nameservers.

  30. QUESTION:
If I buy a domain name on godaddy can I build a website someplace else? Do I have to transfer it somehow?
Does it cost money to transfer it to another host? And how long do I have to stay with godaddy if I register a domain there? If I want to switch to another host can I do that right away? I’m new to this and don’t have the money to go with the website I want to build my website with but I want to secure the .com name I picked.

    • ANSWER:
If you buy a domain name from Godaddy you can transfer it anywhere you want after 60 days.

But I recommend you to get both hosting and a domain name right away, then create just a placeholder website with your website’s name and some short description in order to get ranked at Google (and other search engines) so people can find your website by searching through Google. It can take a couple of months to get ranked so it’s better to start with it right away. Just put anything on your website so Google can index it.

You don’t have to pay a lot for hosting.

I recommend one of these: http://www.tophostingpicks.com

iPage has the best offer right now.
Their standard price is /year (.95) but they have
a 50% sale, one year of hosting for .00.

      Their plan includes:

      Unlimited disk space
      Unlimited bandwidth
      Free domain name

Price: /year (this price includes both hosting and a domain name for a year,
just uncheck any additional services since you don’t need them an this is the total price, no hidden costs)

They have one of the most popular hosting platforms, which currently hosts over a million websites. They’re also one of the oldest hosting companies, founded in 1998.

They include a free point & click online site builder so you can create a website without any programming (easily, just by drag and drop) or you could install WordPress (they include easy, one click install from their control panel), choose a theme that you like, and start adding content.

They also have a great custom control panel with OneClick installs of all the popular software like WordPress, Joomla, Forums, Chat, Galleries, Online stores and a lot more.

    • ANSWER:
To protect a business name within your industry, you would apply for a trademark.

Trademarks can be names of products or services, logos, slogans, packaging and even sounds and smells. In essence, a trademark can be almost anything that is used to identify a particular product or service. Registering a trademark grants the owner exclusive rights to the mark within the specified industry.

Of course, it’s necessary to research the mark comprehensively prior to filing to ensure that there is no possibility of infringing upon another party.

This entails searching the pending & registered Federal and State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files. Then, if clear, you can decide if you would like to file for a Federal or a State trademark.

To register a trademark, that’s done either through your Secretary of State for a State trademark or the US Patent & Trademark Office for a Federal trademark.

If you are only conducting business in one state, then a State trademark is most appropriate. If you conduct (OR are planning to conduct) business in at least 2 states OR between the US & any other country, you can file for a Federal trademark.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

  37. QUESTION:
How can I hide, or change my domain name’s registration on whois?
So I have a website that is promoted through my YouTube videos. I looked up my website on whois today and all my personal information that I used when registering my domain was showing. I was wondering if there was any way I could either hide this, or change the information on my whois domain look up. I just want to be more secure. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Technically all the info on WhoIs is suppose to be correct. Some sites put in false information instead of paying web hosts for “Protection”. To me, that’s a protection racket of its own as you be able to set your WhoIs PERSONAL INFORMATION to Public or Private as you wish. A good contact is all that should be required.

  38. QUESTION:
I just started a home cleaning business I am doing well so far, but how can I find more clients?
I have utilized Care.com, Craigslist, yellowpages.com, kijiji, GoNannies, I’m telling my friends about my service, I have run an ad in our local newspaper, I’ve secured domain names and built webpages. What else can I do? I know there are people out there who need their homes cleaned. Anyone have anymore ideas about how to get my service out there?

    • ANSWER:
Put flyers up in area stores and restaurants that allow it. And let your current clients know that you are looking for more customers – maybe offer some kind of incentive, like a free or half price cleaning, if they get you a customer that has maybe 5 or more sessions.

      Good luck

  39. QUESTION:

  40. QUESTION:
How can I register a domain name?
I have an idea for a website address and I would like to know how I can go about registering it in a safe and secure way?

    • ANSWER:
In the programming section and you ask THIS? Try typing DOMAIN REGISTRAR into ANY search engine and then pick one of the hundreds that will pop up! They ALL do exactly the same thing, charge you a fee to update the DNS database which is what associates a domain NAME with an individual IP address. Bear in mind, the top level domains, COM ORG and the like are a defined SET of domains and you can not add any. All you can control is the next level DOWN from the top level, what precedes the DOT in DOT COM for example. You can find out if a name is already taken by going to ANY registrar site and using their WHOIS function to search the DNS database.

  41. QUESTION:
How does Internet auction sites & dating services work ? Networks & hubs ?
How does Internet Auction & dating services work ? How you have a master computer set up for these kind of web services. How to set up a main Hub and software system and who would host such a secure site ? Any links that someone can supply for me to study. Cheapest place to buy & secure a domain name.

    • ANSWER:
      Greetings Pat

There is way to much to cover in this kind of question and answer format. Meaning there are so many ways to do what you are asking for and too many details you would need to provide. No way to put years of knowledge into a couple of paragraphs.

I think it money well spent if you are serious to find a IT Consultant to sort out your needs vs your budget. Besides unless you are going into the IT business why bother trying to work out the configuration and gear where time is better spent working on the business end of the Auction/Services network.

  42. QUESTION:
Where is the best place to purchase a .io domain name?
I’m looking to purchase a .io domain and I’m running into a lack of sites I find trustworthy. I don’t see GoDaddy, eNom or Gandi offering that domain for usage, so I’m having to look at sites that don’t seem to have secure purchase pages and the like. I’m also wanting to make sure I have access to my DNS settings and contact info changes. Any suggestions for registrars? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Instead of .io, why not try .co.cc? It’s free and has easy registration to the sites. I’m currently running my website on there. I suggest Xtreemhost.org is the best .co.cc provider.

  44. QUESTION:
    domain name or IP?
Hi. Which option is better to use in a large companies network? Setting up a domain name for all workstations to use or setting up an IP address/subnet mask with no domain name? I am not an IT specialist and I am not sure which option is better or more secure, however, I think that domain names are better in the long run. I just need to know the pros and cons of each. Thanks for all you who reply to this. Misty

    • ANSWER:
One reason is all you need. In a large company, use Domain Names, DNS, and DHCP to assign IP addresses and to access the machines. If you ever have to reassign your IP addresses in your company, which you very well may end up doing, you will hate yourself if you use static IP addresses.

  45. QUESTION:
    Name Preferences for Website?
I’m helping a friend develop a website relating to event-planning. He’s been able to secure the following domain names, but can’t decide which one to use. Please provide your preference on the following names:

    - off-the-registry.com

    - festalicious.com

    - monfete.com

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
      I’d go with monfete.com

Festalicious.com sounds silly and goofy – not exactly what he wants to portray himself and his business as.

Off-the-registry.com just doesn’t say anything about the business, so it’s not a good idea.

  48. QUESTION:
whats a good name for my company?
I do decorative (faux) finishes and am an applicator of other high end finished such as Venetian Plaster and Clay based plasters. I have been the only employee of this business and now I am busy enough that I have to hire real employees and do the website thing. I have been calling my company something locally and never thought like a dope that anyone else would use that name. The website has always been available and I never secured the domain name like I should have! Now I can’t use the name I have been calling myself here for a website. The name was Renaissance Finishes. Can anyone else help me come up with a catchy name that would either be about Faux or have an old world connotation to it? I have seen companies with names like Fi Fi FIux..a little too gofy for my taste..but lets see what ‘yall can do! I know you are all so creative I love coming here and reading what you all have to say. I really believe someone can hook me up with a cool name! THANK YOU GUYS!!!!

    • ANSWER:
You’d still have to deal with the .com .net .org .tv .info etc …

You don’t necessarily have to change the name of your company, you can do things like www.RenaissanceFinishesNY.com (assuming you are in New York). There is always a way to solve the problem.

      Use the simplest solution.

  49. QUESTION:
Where I can buy a domain name?
A secure and safe place in the internet. Also a good price!
    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Don’t trust any cheap service, many of them don’t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you’re going to buy domain names, http://www.goldpuma.com is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you (.99). They offer free extras with every domain name:

      Quick Blogcast
      Hosting with Web site builder
      Personalized Email Account
Starter Web Page For Sale/ Parked Page
      Domain Forwarding
      Domain Masking
      100-Pack Email Forwarding
      Total DNS Control
      Change of Registration
      Status Alerts
      Domain Locking

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only .95. You can see their Plan Details accompanied with reliable reviews regarding their service at:
