     Yes,it´s always advisable to register your domain names through a domain name registrar rather than through a primarily focused web hosting service.

     Domain registrars differ greatly in prices and what they offer with each domain registration and in the facility of using their domain name control tools.

     Here’s a couple of things that might be of help:

     You should not pay more than US for a .com domain name registration

     You domain registration should come with full domain name controls – like changing nameservers,pointing and forwarding – and these should be free.

     Well most registrars make this rather difficult so that no one else can “steal” your domain name. If at all possible register it with your friends information (if they dont have email use yours, its easy to change email addresses)

     If you MUST change registrants there will be a procedure you have to follow somewhere on the site you registered the domain. Sometimes that means sending a fax, letter etc. Sometimes it is just a web form that must be verified by the current registrant. It can be done its just a pain.

     The .com crash ended all of the absolutly free offers, nothing is free!

     Check out yahoo’s domain services, the first year is only , and each year after is only , this is affordable for anyones budget! They offer better plans with hosting and pop 3 email, but they are a bit more expensive…

     it’s hard to say, if it’s a small personal website or for a small business then it should not be necessary to register domain names in all TLDs (uk, info, etc). If it’s for a product that is or may become popular at some point in the future then it might be prudent to register these other domains so that there will be no threat that someone will try to get those domains and pose as the company using the .com later on.

     I would recommend at least securing the .net domain name as people seem most familiar with .com and .net domains. The other TLDs are not as likely to be confused with your domain name as most people assume that everything’s a .com anyway when they type it in a browser. If you felt that the site as bound to be popular or generate large amounts of revenue I would recommend registering as many relevant domains as possible, as well as mispellings.

     If you want a .com just change a little bit the name and it should be available.

    What the deal with .INFO domain name? If I wanted to start up a website called AB101.com, but all that was available was AB101.INFO, whats the difference. Can I still do all the same things with a .INFO as with a .COM or a .ORG for that matter? Would I still be able to access the same amount of people with a .INFO domain ending?

      There would be no limits as such, but some people find that it’s more difficult to promote an .info site than a .com site or even a .co.uk site.

      .coms are used because of the popularity factor. The sad reality is that .com’s are overused, meaning .com were suppose to be for commercial websites, .net are suppose to be for network, .biz for business, .info for information, and .org for non-profit organization. And then there are local extensions like .us for United States.

      Google has stated that it doesn’t discriminate against other top level domain extensions, but if you do searches, you will see .com’s with a commanding lead in the search results, but if you look into the process further and understand that .coms are the regular used domain extension, so there are more quality .com websites then their are other extensions. But that is about to change, since the .com domain name is starting to thin out. You will start to see new extensions popping up higher into the search engines.

      To be frank, Your content, how you optimize and how you effectively get back-links is going to be the number one reason you rank high, not your domain extension on your top level domain.

      1. You dont have to enter real information in the DNS if you dont want to.

      2. All US host will have to give up your DNS info and/or contact info if subpoenaed.

      3. Most host offer private records, example network solutions, interNIC.

      4. Read #1 , you never have to put real DNS info, but it is wise to enter real contact info to your hose but not in the DNS record.

      5. I would not seek hosting outside of the US due to issues with intellectual property rights. If someone rips off your website, there would be nothing you could do.

    Should I get a .biz, .net or .info domain name?
    I am putting together a website for myself. THe only purpose of the site is so i can upload websites I am working on, so my clients can view them as work progresses. I am not getting a .com because the only people that are going to the site are my clients, after I send them a link.

    The important thing is that I can view various pages that I upload by typing in something like: www.mysite.net/clientFolder .

    I can get a .info for a year, up to a .net for a year. So the question is whether the domain type matters in this case. Let me know.

      Yes, domain type surely matters. I suggest you get a .NET. The three major domain extensions are .COM, .ORG and .NET. If you can’t get a .COM and .ORG, opt for .NET.

      You can get *some* free domains from http://www.co.cc/ depending on the popularity of the name entered, some are pay some are free to register. http://yourdomainname.co.cc.
      You could also goto http://www.uni.cc for a free domain like http://yourdomainname.uni.cc.

      Regarding the forum or discussion board…depending on who you get hosting with will depend on whether you can set up a forum, they usually require a database to store the posts in, so look for hosting with at least 1 mysql database.

      You can build your own website or upload and install one of the many free CMS (Content Management Systems) like E107 or Joomla. You can also use the blog web applications like WordPress or Drupal as websites instead of just blogs. These too need a database connection.

      It is a code that you need to get from the registrar that domain is registered at, I’m assuming you are probably trying to transfer a domain from one registrar to another. You only need an Auth code for domains that are not .com or .net, atleast for now. You might find the code you are looking for somewhere in the management section in your registrar account. Check the “help” section for any info that registrar gives on transfering names. Hope this helped……

    Had absolutely no problem with GoDaddy or Register.com
    I signed into one of the accounts (which is ridiculous They give you a different username and password for each domain name)any way unlocked it, went into vdeck control panel,domain admin ane zone file manager,typed in the same NS as I had at GoDaddy and Register.com but it kept telling me the NS is not valid.I’ve emailed them,got no help there plus I’ve called 1-888-511-4678 and some other number but got the ol run around at one and left message at other.
    I’ve probably got 70 or so names with ipower.com YES the prices on the names seemed really good but now I ‘m beginning to wonder.I probably would have bought another 1000, So I’m glad I discovered what is becoming a problem as soon as I did.

      I’m also having a domain name problem with a domain name I recently purchased from iPowerWeb. I’d have to say all of their Tech Support staff is useless, and the way their organization is structured makes it damn near impossible to reach anyone live.

      I also had no problem at all with goDaddy, and would be more than willing to pay their higher price once again.

      Thanks for confirming that iPowerWeb stinks. If they don’t fix my problem by tomorrow evening, I plan on canceling my order unless they make it difficult for me to do so.

      Most people tend to prefer .com though, as it is so commonly used.

    Need info/suggestions about where to buy a domain name to set up a web page for info about our tribe will need several buttons for other pages with in site, with pics and emails, but no sales?

      If its a small time site AKA not many visoters you probably want to go with bravehost or tripod Best thing is you can get it for free but your adress would be like yourusername.bravehost.com. If it is larger you could go with yahoo web hosting which is available for a month and up. This price includes domain name(www.yourdomainname.org).

    Is there a way to find out how many domain names are pointing to a specific name server?
    Basically I am trying to find the contact info for someone who owns a domain name I am intersted in.

    I have noticed that all the whois info is private, but I have also noticed that he has is own nameservers…

    If I can find out what other sites are pointed there, maybe I can do a better job of researching his contact info on his other sites…

    any ideas?

      you could just email postmaster@example.com or admin@example.com and it should get to them. sounds like they don’t want to be contacted though…

      You can’t get top level domain for free. There are hosting packages which include free domain but you have to pay for the package so in any case if you need top level domain name you’ve to pay …
