      If your laptop is only showing a Workgroup name, your laptop is not configured to work in a Domain. To connect to a domain the PCs must be running XP Pro or Media Center Edition.

      Unless you are running a DOMAIN server, you don’t have a “domain” so put anything you like in there, just be sure its the same on the Mac and PC.

      The username and password is the WINDOWS username and password that is needed to logon to windows. The IP is the IP for the windows machine. (You can get that from the command line on windows… type ipconfig /all the IP will be listed. Or click on the network icon on the windows tool bar and click “details” ) C++ isn’t any part of the equation here!

    A whois lookup tells me the registrar is: DIRECTI INTERNET SOLUTIONS PVT. LTD. D/B/A PUBLICDOMAINREGISTRY.COM
    And gives a referal URL as: whois.PublicDomainRegistry.com

    But The registrar is used by many different domain name resellers and the referal address has no record of my domain.
    I’m usually very careful about keeping domain details but seem to have misplaced all records to this one. I know there is a site which can tell which service i registered through, but try as i might, i can’t find them now. Any ideas anyone?

      I’m pretty sure you don’t have a domain. What you need to use is the ip address. You can get the ip address by running the ipconfig/all command. It will be a number in this format:

      123.123.123.123 or 123.12.143.11.

      You may also see a number that starts with 10. or 192. – this is your local machine and won’t work.

      I’ve had problems setting up networking DURING the OS install. So first off, I would say just to choose WORKGROUP networking and no domain for the install. Once the system is up and running, you can join it to a domain.

      If you don’t have a IT guy running your network, then you don’t have a domain and leaving it set to a workgroup named WORKGROUP is fine. Its just a way of grouping computers on the network. You can browse to any other workgroup without being a member of that workgroup.

    How can I find my Host and Domain name when setting up a Linksys Wireless G Router?
    I am trying to set up a secure how network for 2 laptops. I have the SSID changed and the network name is broadcast, but how do I secure this? I think I need to change the settings since I can just browse to the network and connect.

    If this helps, I have Brighthouse Cable for broadband access in the Central Florida area.

      host is another word to describe the local computer and domain you don’t need unless you are connecting to a domain controller.

      you are supposed to be able to browse your own network with out using passwords. you can change these settings if you prefer so that any time you want to connect from computer A to B you have to
      supply a user name and password.

      In a nutshell it is whoever is interested.

      .net has an interest in 20-25% of people where as .com is the more popular choice.

      The shorter the length the more appealing. Recognition is why people go for them…if they are like, monster.com, etc. they are more recognizable than some random name. If the domain names tells about a product that is what people go for as well.

    how do i find out the registrant of a domain name?
    Whois does not help me on this. What I need to know is how do I find out who a domain name was purchased from (like godaddy or one of those). I need to get into that account and point the domain name to a new website. I have the username and password to do that, but my client can’t remember where he purchased the domain!

    • ANSWER:
      Really doesn’t matter who the domain name was purchased from as long as you access the Domain Manager to add the name servers located on the DNS tabs. The name servers will be those of the hosting site. If you are transferring domain name ownership from one site to another, there will be extra steps involved which you must follow very closely.

      Too bad you didn’t give domain name as it could have been researched and a better answer possibly given.

    I am the owner of the domain name finditbookit.com. Currently there are two offers on this domain. One for 00 the other one for 00. Although the cost to maintain my domain names are minimal considering annual payments, I was wondering if I should accept these offers or wait. The thing is, you will never know the intention of these buyers behind the offers. Maybe this domain name is the next ticketmaster.com or something else…what is your thought? Should I wait or sell or other options?

      Put it up in an auction. there are lots of domain selling auction sites, you will see the true value, I’m guessing more than those offers.

      To find the owner of any domain, the first step is to go to a whois site.

      1) http://www.whois.net
      2) Input the domain in the ‘WHOIS Lookup’ section
      3) You will generally see the owner of the domain under ‘Registrant’,'Administrative Contact’, or ‘Technical Contact’.

      *Sometimes domain owners have hidden their names by purchasing extra privacy options. In a case like this, they generally will have a made up name and company, BUT you will see a masked email address. This masked email address will not be the owners actual email address, but will forward to the owner.

    Is there a way to find out how many domain names are pointing to a specific name server?
    Basically I am trying to find the contact info for someone who owns a domain name I am intersted in.

    I have noticed that all the whois info is private, but I have also noticed that he has is own nameservers…

    If I can find out what other sites are pointed there, maybe I can do a better job of researching his contact info on his other sites…

    any ideas?

      you could just email postmaster@example.com or admin@example.com and it should get to them. sounds like they don’t want to be contacted though…

    I found a domain name that I want that is available but I cant seem to estimate how much it will cost from one of those domain brokers (that’s what I call them)

      You can purchase select domain names on sale on certain sites.
      For instance 1 and 1 will sell you a .info domain name for [FAQ-ANSWER].99 and godaddy had some sales thatll sell you a domain name like .com for .99.

      You can also buy domain names for as cheap as .88 on namecheap and they will throw in a whois guard.

      But I would recomened searching around a bit, and compare the prices of different registrars.
