I’ll put the steps into points.

Create a free short subdomain.(Actually this subdomain works just as a domain. You can change DNS, CNAME, TXT records there.)

  • Do you see a text box? Enter the desired name of your website. Let’s see I want to get the domain name, “myname(.)co(.)cc”. So I type only “supun” there. Nothing else. The script puts “co(.)cc” after your name itself (So it is “supun(.)co(.)cc”). Click on “Check availability” button.
  • If that domain is already registered, you’ll get a warning message, “www(.)supun(.)co(.)cc is already registered.”
  • That’s sad. Try another name. Let’s say “supun19″. Try it.

Oh! Here comes the message- “www(.)supun19(.)co(.)cc is available. 1 year domain registration for 0$.”
It means you can continue with the registration. Click on the “Continue to registration” button.

  • Then it asks for your Email address and password. (It’s for registered users. ) Skip login and click on the “Create an account now >>”

Provide the details carefully and accurately. Tick the “I accept the Terms of Service” checkbox and click on the “Create an account now ” button.

  • Sign-in page appears. Enter the login details you set in the last step(Registration).

Enter the captcha code. (It’s for avoiding bots.)

  • Click on “Sign In” button.

      Free domains do not exist because the company that is selling a domain (e.g. godaddy.com) has to pay VeriSign and ICANN to register your domain. If you really want your own domain I reccomend buying one at http://www.godaddy.com

      There are a couple of alternatives as long as you don’t mind advertisement on your site. Microsoft Office Live Basics offers a free domain. The only catch is that it will include their logo and link to their service on your site. They are hoping to snag a large share of the market by offering a free domain, hosting and 500MB of storage. It will require a credit card to verify your age.

      You can also visit http://www.dot.tk/ and register a free domain but it will end in .tk rather than .com.

      You could also try a free Web hosting site like http://www.freewebs.com and then use http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ to get a free sub domain. It will redirect the URL to your site without a long difficult Web address.

      If you sign up for www.hostultra.com which is a free hosting site, you could get www.yoursite.vzz.net and a wide range of other things off them. Just set it as a default forwarding page to your server space. Are you hosting it yourself? You will have to get it to forward their browsers to your external IP address. Possibly with a port number following it but I am unsure as to how to set port forwarding for website servering atm. Something like 170.230.123.11:80 or something similar like that. Use javascript or dhtml to forward their browsers.

      If you want a top-level domain name (.com/.net/.org/etc.), you will have to purchase one for a year. Unless someone you know gives you one as a gift, you are not going to be able to get one for free.

      Every single domain name has to be purchased. Because of this, there is no such thing as a site/company that gives away domain names. The cost to upkeep such a site would be too high. It would be the equivalent to a person earning ,000 a year trying to pay off a ,000,000 mortgage. Yikes, right?

      Don’t forget that you will also have to pay anywhere from to 0+ a year for hosting. Mine was on the low end because I did not need a lot of space. If you are in need of a large amount of space and you have high expectations, then expect to pay at least 0+ a year.

      I know that you are overwhelmed at the costs, but it is what it is. There is an upside though. Unlike free domain names, free domain hosting does exist. The problem is that you will probably get ads, a small amount of space and bandwidth, limited features and the risk that the site might close down. In other words, it will not be the same as paid hosting. This is the absolute cheapest way to get a site with a domain name though because all you would need to pay is a year for the domain name.

      If you have such a credit, you can use it for the renewal *or* for a new registration.

      I’ve used up mine for the year. (Then again, I have four domains at DH; I’ve had an account there for eight years.)
