Domain Name Registration And Hosting

You’ve probably seen domain names for sale for ridiculous amounts of money. Think those names will lead to surefire online success? Before you get tempted to buy one of those names, read this article.
One of the most interesting phenomena on the Internet is the selling of domain names. In some situations it could even be likened to an auction-based system. There was a time in the nineties that it reached ridiculous proportions, with several people becoming millionaires from selling domain names.
Why are these names so expensive? Who are the buyers? Does domain name selling actually backfire sometimes? In what situations has it paid off? A lot of these questions have no clear cut answers, as long as the world has rotated; people have bought and sold “everything,” literally. Domain name selling would be consigned to a scam if it was examined closely.
Most of the names that go for extremely high prices (for this topic anything above a hundred dollars is considered extremely high) are domain names that contain key words that are in demand. Some of the domain names are actually category names. That’s all very well and good so far. But when these practices favor the seller over the buyer, then something has gone wrong with the equation.
Most of my grumbling against domain name reselling stems from the view that, from a branding perspective, it is a failure. Quite a number of SEO proponents argue that having key words in the domain name is good (something I have never agreed with) but the real issue is, the name alone does not make good SEO. If it is good to have the key word in the domain name, why wasn’t Monster simply called Job seekers?
I will be using as reference an excellent book by Al and Laura Ries, “The Eleven Immutable Laws of Internet Branding.” Al Ries considers domain names so important that he uses up two of his eleven laws on how to name your web site. But why am I bothering to bash a totally “harmless” practice? First, because it seems to be catching on in SEO circles; and second, it will definitely add useless costs to the cost of domain name registration and hosting, making it relevant to any one who is thinking of buying that attractive domain name. By the end of this article, you should be able to go through the mental exercise of coming up with an original name of your own.
In branding the most important decision you can make is what to call your product, in this case your web site. This concept seems to have encouraged the buying of “key word rich” domain names. A good translation of the phrase “key word rich” is “generic.” Your SEO expert and you webmaster will probably advise you to name a site which fits that description.
Sadly, most of these domain names are pretty awful; they lack imagination, and a lot of them just copy a description (common adjective) or a class (common noun) and turn it into a name (proper adjective or noun). Yet they are sold for ridiculously high prices; think www.desktop.com, www.mortgage.com, www.womenonline.com, www.seopro.com, www.etoys.com, and I am sure you think, what great names! Well, all failed in the first dot com bust; their names did not help them survive the changing tides.
In Alexa’s current top ranking web sites, it will be interesting to note that there are no common adjective nor common noun website names (the kind of names that are most commonly sold). All websites that are listed as top sites are proper nouns. In any listing of top brands there are no generic brand names (common adjectives or common nouns), yet unsuspecting buyer after buyer is sucked into the mental trap that all it takes for a web site to achieve success is a generic name.

  2. QUESTION:
what is the different between web hosting & domain name registration?
When I did web hosting I found my Domain name in different company ?
    - What is the different between them, why not both in one company?
    - Do I have to know what company my domain are?
    - and what Unlock ?
    - Private/public?
    - Auth code?

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
      Hi Roomi7,

Let me answer your questions one by one.

      - What is the difference between them, why not both in one company?

Web hosting is a service that offers you a web space to house your website, whereas domain name is just a locator to help people find your website. That’s why you need to register a domain name in conjunction with a web hosting service.

For example, if you’ve registered a domain name say, XYZ.com, then by simply typing XYZ.com into my web browser, I will be able to get on your website.

Technically speaking, domain name is connected (or pointed) to your website, so whenever people enter domain name into the browser, it’ll bring them there.

Domain name and web hosting can both be either in the same company or different companies. Let me explain with an example.

      Company A
      - domain registration
      - web hosting 0

      Company B
      - domain registration
      - web hosting 0

In such scenario, if you want to save cost, you’ll probably register your domain name with company B and buy web hosting with company A. But because your domain name and website will be hosted on different locations, you need to go to your company B’s account and point your domain name to company A in order to “attach” your domain name with your web space.

Some people prefer to have both the domain name and website hosted with the same company to steer clear of domain pointing, although it’s a very simple task to perform.

      - Do I have to know what company my domain are?

Yes, you need to know to which company your domain name belongs so that you can do the necessary domain settings to suit your needs, or perform domain pointing if you were hosting your site with another company.

      - and what Unlock?

In your domain control panel, you’ll see a lock and unlock feature for your domain name. This is for security reason. There are horror cases where bad registrars unscrupulously transfer unlocked domain names to their own servers without the prior consent of the domain owner and the original domain registrar. They can do this without having to access your domain account. That’s why you must always lock your domain name. Only when you need to transfer your domain name to another company then should you unlock it to allow the transfer. Once transfer is over, remember to lock it again.

      - Private/public?

You can choose to keep your personal info especially your email address from the public. That means whoever tries to find your personal info using the whois tool, they will only see your domain registrar’s info rather than your own info. This is to protect you from spammers. Private registration costs you a few bucks more.

      - Auth code?

This code will only issue to you by your domain registrar when you need to transfer your domain name to other domain or web hosting company.

      Hope that helps. Cheers ;)

      Soon Chai

  6. QUESTION:
Which is the best plan for domain name registration and website hosting in seo point of view ?
What are the factors should i care when selecting these two factors? Which is affect seo and web traffic?

    • ANSWER:
Hosting can have an effect from an SEO point of view as Google wants to see pages loading quickly. If you have a poor host, say with an overloaded server, and you pages are slow to load you could find it harder to get high rankings.

It makes no different where you register your domain but it is better not to get it as part of the hosting package. This gives you flexibility to change hosts easily later, if this becomes necessary.

  7. QUESTION:
where can I find the best (cheap) domain name registration only or domain name + hosting?
OK. I don’t have a lot of money (right now and plus I’m outside US) to purchase the usual price for a domain name. So can someone please direct me to somewhere that is reliable. It is for my portfolio website and I need to get it back up. I already have a reliable hosting company that I’ve been using for almost a year or so now but they have stopped taking co.cc domains.

I will take it under consideration if a really good domain name+hosting is suggested. . I just don’t like my information floating every which way over the internet.

For those of you who suggest domain and hosting, the hosting needs to be able to accommodate my wordpress blog(possible installation via fantastico).

I’ve been searching around on my own and kept running into issues with who is offering it. the place, although offering the domain for a cheap price were look shoddy.

Sorry this is so long. Just didn’t want to forget anything.
Hope I have provided sufficient information. Feel free to contact me for more info.

    • ANSWER:
I followed the advice on a blog called internetbiztutor@blogspot.com (Lesson 2) and paid around US for a dot com domain from GoDaddy (after a discount of 35%). As for the hosting package, I also followed its advice. It’s one of the cheapest hosting package that I managed to find after using the recommended discount code of “Valuediscount25″.

Fyi, one thing that I really like about Hostgator is their Live Chat support which I feel is very important, especially since I am quite new to hosting a domain. I tried asking them for help twice and they helped me almost immediately.

    • ANSWER:
I believe not trivial to get into the domain registrar business, see links below. It’s a world easier to get a hosting reseller account, many hosting companies are actually small operators selling space on a bigger company’s servers. I don’t know the details of how hosting companies manage the free domain they include with some accounts, maybe a middleman.

  13. QUESTION:
Can I register a domain name with a cheap registrar and transfer it to another hosting company? Pros and cons?
I’ve decided on a particular hosting serivce which charges exorbitant domain name registration fees. I’m wondering if I can save on the domain registration fee by signing up with a cheaper registrar and then transferring it to the hosting service of my choice, and if there are any costs and downsides in this.

    • ANSWER:
Yes you can. I even recommend it!

      PRO’s

      1. If you found a domain name registrar you like you should go with them. It’s even better if it’s their core business.
      2. It’s really easy to setup. You just have to add your hosts name servers to your domain name (basically you just write three lines in your domain’s control panel like: ns1.somehosting.com ns2.somehosting.com ns3.somehosting.com) and that’s it!
      3. Your domain name is registered with another company so if you have any problems later on with your hosting, you can easily switch hosts, just copy your site content to a new host and point your domain to their name servers.

      CON’s

      1. Most hosting companies give you a free domain name with your hosting plan, and they usually renew it for free as long as you host with them, but since your company charges a lot for a domain name registration it’s probably not one of them, so it’s not a problem.

P.S. You didn’t wrote the name of a hosting company that you decided on, but you should check one of these:

      1. For a small to medium traffic site (like up to 100K visitors monthly):
I recommend either Godaddy Economy or the Deluxe plan:

      http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy/

      (prices from .74/month – .99/month)

      or Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

Their standard price is .95/month (9.40/year)
but you can use the promo code PLUS and get
      discount +2 Free domain names.

      Disk space: Unlimited
      Bandwidth: Unlimited
      2 Free domain names
      Unlimited domains and subdomains
      Price: .78/month (.40/year)

      2. If you need something better/more expensive I recommend:

      http://www.mediatemple.com

      http://www.slicehost.com

      Prices start from /month.

  14. QUESTION:
Does anyone know where i can register a free domain name and at the same time get a free hosting provider?
i want to be able to get a free domain name registration and a free hosting account with the same provider of the domain and registration. I don’t want to have to transfer domains… thank you

    • ANSWER:

  15. QUESTION:
pay money for domain name and web hosting?
i know why we are paying for the web hosting because they store our files on server and keep them online.
but why are paying money for domain name registration?
    where the money goes?
    is internet has a owner?
does domain name registration cost electricity or equipment?

    • ANSWER:
The money to register a domain name goes to support ICANN. There are people as well as systems needed to oversee the registration of domains.

  16. QUESTION:
    Is 1&1 a good/reliable domain name registrar/host?
I was thinking of setting up my blog using their hosting and domain name registration since you get a year free plus 2 domain names for a month, are they reliable/good, etc? Anything I should know? I am planning to set up a few pages (Specifically a wordpress blog, a page with photography, etc)

    • ANSWER:
Pretty solid from what I could find out. I did the same research sometime ago, and after having registered several domain names from a few different providers, this is what I found. There is not that much “service” they have to offer in terms of the domain name, apart from letting you change a few settings like the Nameservers etc. All of them do the same job and none can deny you any of those services. If it gets hairy due to some reason at some point, you can always transfer. When you transfer, you will usually get an extra year free too!

For hosting your photography page, you can use the HTML editor inside the File Manager of your hosting provider, if you have to do some basic work. If you want more complexity, you will have to build the pages you want externally and then upload them – there must be many instructions on the internet on how to do this.

The WordPress blog that you want to set up really depends on the hosting service anybody offers. If they will let you run the WordPress script (and all of them seem to do these days), then those features come to you from WordPress. Get on a chat session with their Tech. Support person if you need any help with a specific resources from your hosting service.

I don’t want to be doing any selling here, but I have found Hostmonster to be an excellent service provider. That said, I have no reason to believe any other would/would not be any worse/better.

  17. QUESTION:
Question about domain names and web hosting?
I am wanting to develope a website for my personal training service. Does anyone know any sites with either totally free domain name registration/ free web hosting or cheap domain name/and free web hosting?

    • ANSWER:
      1. free domain name registration/ free web hosting – doesn’t exist

      2. cheap domain name/and free web hosting – that does exist but doesn’t work really well, for a cheap domain name I recommend Godaddy (you can get it for .69), for free web hosting I don’t recommend any

      3. cheap hosting (free domain name included) would be the best option, like one of these: http://www.webhostingtable.com/

Powweb has the best offer right now. It’s on a 50% sale – .88/month (.56/year), and you get a free domain from them.

Their hosting plan includes web builder, so you can create your site just by drag and drop (without any programming), or you could install WordPress (easy, one click install from their control panel), choose a theme that you like, and start adding content.

  18. QUESTION:
if i register a domain name with a hosting service is that in their name?
what i am trying to ask is if i buy a hosting and domain registration package if later i decide i want to change hosting services do i have control of that domain name or do they?

    • ANSWER:
Most will register it in your name. But the best way is to register a domain name with a 3rd party, so if you decide to change hosting, your host can’t do anything to stop you, or to make it harder for you. And it’s really easy to do.
For example I host my sites with Dreamhost but register almost all the domain names with Namecheap http://www.namecheap.com (they have a new promo code every month, for the october it’s: indiansummer (.81))
It’s a good strategy even if you’re happy with your current host but want to move some of the higher traffic websites to a VPS or a dedicated server. The free domain(s) you get with your hosting plan, you can use for some less important websites, although they are all registered in your name so you can move them also, it’s just more of a hassle.

For the hosting I recommend either:
      Godaddy Deluxe plan

      http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy

      Disk space: 150 GB
      Bandwidth: 1500 GB
One discounted (.19) domain name with hosting
      Unlimited domains and subdomains

      Price: .99 (for monthly payments)
(I recommend it if you want to pay monthly.)

      or

      Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

Their standard price is .95/month (9.40/year)
but you can use the promo code PLUS and get
      discount +2 Free domain names.

      Disk space: Unlimited
      Bandwidth: Unlimited
      2 Free domain names
      Unlimited domains and subdomains
      Price: .78/month (.40/year)
(I recommend it if you want to pay yearly.)

  19. QUESTION:

  20. QUESTION:
what are the cheap and best domain registration and hosting companies in hyderabad, india?
Can anyone name the cheap and best domain registration and web hosting companies in hyderabad, india. There are lot many in hyderabad and i am unable to decide who is the best? whose service is best comparing with cost? Most of the hosting co’s make false promises and make business. just name few who are genuine and at the same time economical.

    • ANSWER:
You don’t have to choose a hosting company from India. I’m from Europe but am hosting with Dreamhost (a US company). You just need a credit card or a Pay Pal account to pay them online.

Since you’re from India I recommend http://www.hosttell.com/one They are one of the leading European hosting companies, and they currently have a promotion in India. They are offering free hosting and a domain (I think you have to pay about €10 setup fee and that’s it). Every plan includes Photo Gallery, WebEditor (so you can build a website without knowledge of HTML), Google Adwords coupon (so you can advertise your website on google for free) and a lot more. Check them out.

P.S. They are running this promotion in UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and India so if you’re from one of these countries you can get really cheap web hosting.

If you need more disk space or options or want to host more websites on a single hosting account I recommend either Godaddy Deluxe plan:

      http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy/

      Price: .99/month
Price of a discounted domain with any hosting plan is .19

      or Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

Their standard price is .95/month (9.40/year)
but you can use the promo code PLUS and get
      discount +2 Free domain names.

      Disk space: Unlimited
      Bandwidth: Unlimited
      2 Free domain names
      Unlimited domains and subdomains
      Price: .78/month (.40/year)

  21. QUESTION:
    domain registration,web hosting?
    Hai friend,
I have one doubt, is it possible to register domain name one vendor, website hosting another vendor….
because some vendors asking small amount for domain registration but there website hosting plan cost is higher, some vendors asking domain registration high amount but website hosting plan are feasible….That’s why i got a doubt is it possible to register domain one vendor and website hosting another vendor…

    • ANSWER:
It is possible, but you have to go to your domain name’s control panel and setup the name servers of your host.

But there are some great hosts which offers both cheap hosting and a free domain name.

I recommend one of these: http://www.webhostingtable.com/

Powweb has the best offer right now. It’s on a 50% sale – .88/month (.56/year), and you get a free domain (like www.yourwebsite.com) from them.

Their hosting plan includes web builder, so you can create your site just by drag and drop (without any programming), or you could install WordPress (easy, one click install from their control panel), choose a theme that you like, and start adding content.

  22. QUESTION:
do you know a good website for domain registration and hosting?
I have to register a domain name, I’d like to to it with a company which provides a good customer service so that I can contact them if I have any technical problem…..

    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
If you are going to have your own web site, it’s
important that you select a quality web host.

Where you have your site hosted can make the
difference between a successful website and a
      failure. It’s that important.

So here are the things you need to look for in a
      web host…

      1) Unlimited disk space – you don’t want to run
out of disk space when people are trying to
      access your site.

      2) Unlimited bandwidth – It’s important that your
host be able to deliver your content in the event
that a lot of people are visiting your site at
      the same time.

      3) Unlimited websites – You may start with one
site, but you may find you want to launch others
as well. This option is important.

      4) Free setup – there’s no reason you should be
      paying setup fees.

      5) 99.9% uptime guarantee – No one can guarantee
100% uptime, but some hosts can get awfully
      close.

      6) Installed software for systems, database,
scripting, email and more – This will appear as
CGI, Perl, MySQL, SSH, POP and other acronyms I
don’t understand. It’s ok, you don’t need to
      understand them either.

      7) CPanel hosting – this is the defacto control
panel making it easy to administer your site
      8) 24/7 support – I have been with hosts who
didn’t answer their phones. It’s scary. Support
      is critical.

      9) No contracts or hidden fees – everything
      should be made clear

      10) A fair price – Most hosts start at or so
per month. That’s not bad, but there is better.

I’ve used a number of web hosts in the past
fifteen years. I’ve had some nightmarish
experiences and I’ve had some great experiences.

So I am frequently asked who I recommend for web
      hosting.

The host I’ve found that meets all of the above
requirements and beats the price on all others is
      HostGator.

In fact, several of my servers are with them
      TODAY!

I guess that says it all.

So don’t sweat it as you look for the perfect web
host. I’m happy with Host Gator’s service and I
think you will be as well.

Try the coupon code “LUCKY” and you may get a
discount on services. I’m not sure if it still
works but it’s worth a try. If not, their prices
are already low enough that it won’t matter.

What is a good CHEAP Domain name registration company, and how long have you used them?
I want to use Microsoft Office Live free website hosting, but bring my own domain name so if I want to quit, I can keep my domain name to take it elsewhere to host my website.

    • ANSWER:
With microsoft Office live you can eighter get a new domain name or transfer a existing domain name all the procedures are in their FAQ section, as far as transfering your domain name from Microsoft Office Live to another Registrar you can do that after 90 days since your last change, both these subjects are covered in their FAQ’s so to answer your question yes you can bring a existing domain name to Office Live and if you want to quit you can take it with you.

      Additional Information:
I currently have 2 domains through officelive, http://www.silvermoonfurniture.com and http://www.newmtntavern.com go to your favorite search engine and use keywords “silver moon furniture” and “new mountain tavern” and see how these sites rate :P any doubt that you have full ownership of domains just do a whois on eighter of my domains to see that you have full ownership

  25. QUESTION:
Who Actually Owns Domain Name Registration.?
Who Actually Owns Domain Name Registration, i mean when we buy a domain name who do we pay for the privilege. I know hosting company’s offer domain name registration and take a cut if they are a reseller, but who owns the actual business.

    • ANSWER:
I’m not sure that it is a business. I think if you have a domain name server you can register domains. It is more of a standard than a business. I found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Corporation_for_Assigned_Names_and_Numbers

That organisation oversees domain names but isn’t a business but a non-profit organisation.

  26. QUESTION:
is there such a thing as unlimited domain registration for one price?
Im trying to become an affiliate marketer and it seems like I will have to try my hand in several different products to find my niche. Trying to save some money with the domain name registration aspect. I found web hosting companies with unlimited web hosting services. I’m just looking for something like it in domain name registration.

    • ANSWER:
I doubt that you will find unlimited domains but you can try using sub-domains. You purchase a domain name such as xxx.com. You can then add aaa.xxx.com, bbb.xxx.com, etc. (Example answers.yahoo.com) Each can point to a different folder in your web space. Depending on the company there may be a limit. I believe I can use 20 with the company I use.

  27. QUESTION:
What domain hosting site can you recommend as a great value for a family website?
Preferably Australian. I want something that holds at least a couple of Gigs and that can also offer domain name registration.
I’ll just add that I’m not interested in geocities, angelfire, tripod etc.

    • ANSWER:
Hi! The most important thing is to never never register a domain through your hosting company. They can then use that to blackmail you to stay on their hosting if there is a problem, you want to register a domain and keep control of it, so register a domain at enom.com or godaddy.com and then just update the DNS servers to point to your host. It is easy to do.

For a nice cheap Australian hosting company you might try

      http://www.valuehosting.com.au/

      or

      http://ausweb.com.au/

But i haven’t tried either of those personally.

  28. QUESTION:
how long after a domain name registration has officially expired can it be renewed under another persons name
Trying to change domain owner and host, so i want to wait till it expires and renew it under a new name with a new host. plz help

    • ANSWER:
Most registrars have a 45 day grace period (ranges from 30 to 60 days) after the domain expires. This is to allow the previous owner to extend the registration.

  29. QUESTION:
Question on: Domain Registration, Web Hosting, Redirecting Webpages, Domain Contracts, and More!?
Okay, this is a little long so bare with me.

First of all I’m 15 and I thought it would be a good time register a few “MyName” domains because I’m going to be a successful entrepreneur [don't think I'm obnoxious, I'm just optimistic =D ] and the last thing I want is somebody impersonating me with MyName.com and to not be willing to sell the domain!
And since the internet if of growing use, everybody should probably have a domain in their name.

Anyhow, I just contacted the owner of MySurname.com and they said they wouldn’t be prepared to sell, because they want to give it to their children or something. Which was kind of a b*tch because I was hoping for an Email address such as – “MyFisrtName@MySurname.com”
But hey, I guess you can’t have it all.
And maybe I’ll get it one day anyhow.

But as odd as it may seem, I’d rather have MyFullName.com instead of just MySurname.com because it would be harder for people to find me! And it may look less formal.

So now, there are a few things I wish to know.

    1. What is the best/least expensive domain registration provider out there?

Is there any sort of a comparison site or anything?
I’m hoping to buy maybe 10 – 20 domain names.
    [MyName.com, MyName.net, MyName.info, etc.]
So if the site has something for bulk registration discounts it would be good.

    2. If I want to receive Emails at one of the domains – E.g. Darren@MyDomain.com – do I still have to pay for web hosting if I don’t actually want a website, just to receive Emails?

    3. If I DO have to pay for just receiving Emails on it, but not having a website; If I use Windows Live Admin Center to receive Emails from it do I still have to pay for web hosting?

I use a lot of Windows Live Services on a daily basis. [Hotmail, MSN Messenger, Windows Live Mail] so I would like to use Admin Center anyway because I love all of Windows Live’s features.

    4. I’m not sure about redirecting webpages or anything but I’ve read it has something to do with the DNS Control Panel.

So the question is: If I want to have all-but-one of the domains to redirect to the main webpage; do I have to pay for web-hosting on all of them to access the DNS Control Panel on all of them?
Or can you make webpages redirect without having to pay for web-hosting on them?
As in, does the DNS Control Panel come free with the domain?

    5. When you register a domain with the “1 Year” thing written under it, is that a binding contract?
For example, if you sign up for a 1 Year Domain package with provider X, can you transfer the domains to provider Y after a few months if they have a better price plan? Or must you stay with the first one for the full year?

    6. If you are reading your Emails through Windows Live Admin Center does the Junk Mail filter still filter your mail for you or must you use a third party program?
    I can’t see why I wouldn’t; I just thought I’d throw that in.

    7. Are there any countries that won’t let you use their domain extension unless you are a citizen?

    8. Can you redirect any domain you own to any webpage?

    9. So far I haven‘t found a domain registration provider that you can register ANY extension with, is there such a thing?
I want to register some very uncommon extensions.

That’s about all I can think of right now.
I’m not actually expecting anybody to be able to answer ALL the questions, but if you can answer as many as possible and if possible PLEASE number your answers to my questions.

    Thanks a lot!

Where to register a domain name for free? Please give list of all websites which allow free domain name registration and allow for free website hosting services.I need a proper domain name for my website like mywebsitename.com ,not a sub-domain like mysitename.domainsitename.com .I have heard there are websites which give free webhosting,my question is-is there websites which give away free domain names. Thanks to all the people for answering.

    • ANSWER:
You can’t get a .com domain name for free! It doesn’t exist!
Those who offer you a free domain name will register it under their name and not yours, so they would be an actual owner of the domain, and they can take it away from you whenever they want.

Since you’re from India, the closest to free hosting and a .com domain name that you can find are http://www.hosttell.com/one They are one of the leading European hosting companies, and they currently have a promotion in India. They are offering free hosting and a domain (you have to pay about €10 setup fee and that’s it).

  33. QUESTION:
A hosting company stole my domain name without do process?
I hosted with ait hosting service and when I decided to move my domains to another hosting service they decided to change the registration of the master domain to their company. How can I fight this e legal action? I contacted ICANN but they do not seem to have much advice.

    • ANSWER:
Quite common for hosting companies to offer free domain with hosting, and they retain ownership of the domain. I doubt domain was ever yours to begin with. Too bad, but unethical is not illegal. You will probably find notice of this in all the fine print you agreed to when opening your hosting account.

Your only hope is if your name was listed as owner at the time of registration and they did an illegal transfer, but I doubt it.

I have hosting and a domain name. I want to change my domain name, how do I do this? ?
I have payed for a full year of my current domain, and I am currently paying monthly for my hosting. I would like to keep my hosting but change my domain name associated with it. Can I have more than 1 domain name on my hosting? I know i’ll have to buy registration for my new domain but I just want to make sure I can change it one way or another with my hosting.

    • ANSWER:
All you have to do is point the new dns names to your existing host. This will occur on your name server for the new domain.

3 things need to work together. Domain registration, which points to your name servers; Domain name servers which point dns names to IP addresses; and physical hosts.

      If you have:
      www.domain_1.com -> 1.2.3.4,

      just add:
      www.domain_2.com -> 1.2.3.4

You may have to configure your host to respond to the two domain names.

  43. QUESTION:
how do i register a domain name?
Hi, I’d like to try registering a domain name for myself – I want to set up my own business eventually and would like to play around with web design before I dive into the deep end.

I’m willing to pay nominal costs like web hosting and domain name registration costs but would like to do the rest by myself.

However, I’m at GoDaddy registering a domain name – so domain names are registered for a certain period (like one year?), what does that mean?

What happens during renewal time? Do I pay the same costs? Or is the domain name more expensive, less expensive?

    • ANSWER:
godaddy is a fairly cheap place to start and you select the term as you stated. Then at the end of your term you will need to make sure either you update any payment information with them to renew or choose a different hosting service to keep the domain name once your godaddy account expires. As long as you have it active with anyone you will be able to keep it for the time period you state.

Are There Any Sites That I Can Get A Domain And Hosting From For VERY Cheap, Or Even Better Yet: FREE?
I’m looking to buy a particular .com domain name that’s listed as available, however I’m on a budget, I’m also looking for hosting.

If you know of a company/site, can you list it here for me to review, and list it’s pro’s and con’s.

I’m looking for the following features with my domain registration/hosting:

Multiple email addresses, (around 10 should suffice).
Construction tool and HTML editor, (my knowledge of HTML and CSS is intermediate at best, but I do have some widgets and custom HTML that I would like to impliment in conjunction with the construction tool).
Very cheap, or free, with no advertising.

    Thanks for your suggestions.

    • ANSWER:

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

http://www.goldpuma.com is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you (.99 /month).

But if you’re looking for the best service on the web, take a look at: http://bluehost-service.atspace.com . As an experienced webmaster I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them. Their service is really great and easy to use.

  47. QUESTION:
Is the domain name a one time registration fee?
This guy is offering web hosting for /year, and /year to renew my web domain, but I thought that once you buy your domain name, you don’t have to pay monthly. By the way, how do I know what web hosting to choose? Are they all the same?

    • ANSWER:
You have to renew a domain name each year, it’s yearly registration.

For hosting I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/

Powweb is on a 50% sale – .88/month (.56/year), and you get a free domain from them.

If you already have a domain, add it instead of a new one, and they will initiate the transfer of that domain to their hosting, and renew it for free every year, as long as you host with them. This is how most of the hosts do it.

P.S. I recommend a host which offers Unlimited Domains. (Powweb does) That means that it allows hosting of multiple website on the same account (you have to pay for each additional domain name registration, but you don’t have to pay for additional hosting). So for example, if the first site costs you , each additional site will cost you just the domain name registration fee (like ).

  48. QUESTION:
Best choice for buying domain name/web hosting?
I’m interested in making a website with my own domain name. I have hardly any web page making skills yet but I think I could learn quickly.

I’m not sure how to start off the “getting a website” process though and I’d rather not get a free website from angelfire or anything like that.

I want to register a domain name and I’m not sure whether I’d rather get like a 5 year registration from somewhere cheap or a more expensive “domain name forever” (which sounds really good). I’d want a domain name forever because i might stop using the site for a while and come back to it later, and i wouldn’t want to keep the web hosting during the break but still keep the domain name. My requirements for web hosting are easily met. Two digit figure bandwidth/storage are probably fine.

Option 1 is from e.g. 3ix.org getting a domain name AND a web hosting – i believe its total a year.
Option 2 is getting a more expensive plan like webhostingpad.com but getting a domain name forever and being able to switch hosting after a year or so. First year costs nearly .

    Questions:
    - Am i mistaken about anything I’ve said, have i been misled
    - If my needs are practically met by any service provider, what is my best option? (not necessarily one i’ve mentioned)
    - By the way is there a way to buy a domain name forever without web hosting?

    • ANSWER:
Dear friend, you can’t buy a domain name forever. you should know that even google and yahoo websites have not bought their domain names forever and they have no way but to renew their domain names before expiring.

Some web hosting services mislead their visitors by saying this sentence “Domain forever”. But in fact this sentense means” as long as you use our web hosting service you can own this domain name.”

If I were you I bought domain name and web hosting service both from GoldPuma. http://www.goldpuma.com is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you (.99 /month). As an experienced webmaster I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them. Their service is really great and easy to use.

This way you can own your domain name with or without web hosting service. After a while if you don’t need yur web hosting plan you are allowed to not renoew it and just renew your domain name and own it.

I change the DNS as indicated but the site still didn’t propagation after 48hrs. He now wants access to my domain registration, UN and PW but I’m not giving it to him. • ANSWER:
