A little known Internet business that can potentially earn you hundreds of thousands of dollars happens to be something not many people have heard of. This is the business of domain name selling.
The domain name of Diamond allegedly sold for .5 million. The buyers of Vodka disclosed their price at million. Now do not get too excited; domain names that sell for this amount of money are few and far between. It all depends on timing, which next big company wants to buy it, and just how much they are willing to pay for it.
There are a lot of factors you have to consider when deciding whether or not jumping into the huge domain name pool is the best business for you or not. Just like any business, buying and selling domains has its risks as well as its benefits. And you cannot go into the business blind. Many people start up quickly, get overly excited, buy a number of domain names that no one else wants, and find themselves out of the money they spent and now the owners of domain names they do not know what to do with. There are some basic points you need to be aware of when it comes to the domain name business.
1.) Research. Aside from the basics, knowing a lot of specific domain name terms and details will aide you during your early days. “Domainers” is typically the term used for domain buyers and sellers. Traffic means the amount of visitors a domain or website receives and can be type-in, expired, or some other type. Look into domain name appraisal so you can have some idea how much your domains are worth once you obtain them. There are a lot of specifics to acquaint yourself with – and if you do not already know what a domain name is, you may want to find out.
2.) Money. First and foremost, you will need a startup budget in order to buy domain names. Obtaining a domain can be fairly simple or quite a struggle depending upon which domain name you want to buy. You can either create entirely new domains, buy old ones that are no longer in use, or buy domains owned by other people. Each domain will have a price, some higher than others. Knowing what you plan to spend can make a big difference when deciding what domains to buy.
3.) Picking the right names. There are plenty of good domain names out there – and there are also plenty of completely useless ones. Some domain names are generic, that is, they encompass a large buyer base. Diamond and Vodka are good examples of generic domains. The trick is trying to find the domains that are money-makers. There are a lot of tips you can use when picking your way through the domain name orchard. Prefixes, suffixes, acronyms, typo domains, and niche markets are just a few worth mentioning. Do your research; promptly buying up a domain name of Ladies89482 will not get you anything. You are going to want to know why.
4.) Know what to do with them. Once you buy domain names, you cannot just sit back and expect things to happen. There are various things you can do with your new domains to get them sold or make yourself some extra cash. You can park your domains with specific sites that will then place ads on the page people see when they visit your domain. If they click these ads, you get money. Many of these domain parking websites also offer selling services. Think in terms of eBay only specifically for domain names and regulated much better. The key items to remember for your domains are that they need to build traffic and Internet presence in order to get more notice from potential buyers.
5.) Reinvest. After you have made a certain percentage of profit (depends upon what you want that percentage to be; everyone’s portfolio is different), buy more domain names in order to keep your new business growing and earning you money. Like any business with products, the domain names are your products, so once you run out of them, you will not be making any more money. With the profit you make, you may be able to expand and buy more domains than before. Some people have done domain name selling for so long, websites that offer domain registration like GoDaddy also offer bulk registration; 50 domain names minimum.
Most people who start out selling domains may only make on their first crop of names, but as you continue to work at the trade, understand the market, and enhance your skills, the right domains can easily work their way into the ,000 or even ,000,000 range. Remaining steadfast and dedicated are the keys to succeeding, and with millions of domain names on the Internet ripe for the picking, there is no reason for you to loose out on a piece of the pie.

QUESTION:
Domain Name Appraisal ? Values of .Com?
What is the best place for getting an appraisal for a domain name.
Example. YourSeller.Com I put on the auction market and have had 2 different appraisals and they were both very different.
I have been selling domains for a while BUT I have been selling without appraisal and without advertising. People visit the domain and they all point to 1 area and there is a link that points to the domains for sale page and they are listed there. So if people are interested they just usually offer and at that point I accept or deny. I have seen SEDO and Domain after market but also looking for a better way to sell.-
ANSWER:
The service I have been using is seoranker, appraisals are just a rough starting point and really it all depends on how bad the people want a certain domain name. Also it seems like there are many third parties out there with their hands out for money so I see nothing wrong with using a free appraisal service. Example: YourSeller.Com appraised value ,000.00 USD

QUESTION:
Domain Name Appraisal????
I put up www.gta4fans.com for a 90 day auction, starting price 1,000 dollars. The domain name is based off of the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto IV, and it seems like a very popular name once the game comes out and ppl want cheats/strategies/etc. If you’re in the domain buying/selling business, could you please give me an appraisal of this domain name, and tell me how much it will probably go for?-
ANSWER:
I do think that you’re over-valuing that domain as well. If you build the site up & develop a (small) community of users I think you could get a few hundred out of it – but for the domain itself as it sits right now, I think that the other answers are probably fairly accurate. I’m sure you can get more than the reg fee for the name – & maybe as much as 0 for it…. but probably not much more undeveloped, at least at this time.

QUESTION:
Domain name appraisal question?
Someone wants to buy my domain name ClickTravelling.com but I don’t know how much to sell it for, any suggestions? I’ve already asked at one of the domain name forums but nobody will respond to me. Thanks for your help.-
ANSWER:
It is always important to know who it is that wants to buy your domain name. Is it an individual? A small corporation? Or a big corporation? This is important information to know when deciding how much to charge for a domain name. Also, just like real estate, domain name sales are often based off of comps, or comparison sales. The best place to find those comps are sites that specialize in domain sales like NameBio.com. Do a search for names that sold with the word “click” in it as well as the word “traveling”. There is a good chance that you will find a comp sale there. Estibot.com is an automated domain name appraisal site but the appraisals tend to be a little high. Good luck with the sale!

Estibot, but none of them are truly accurate, just in a wide ballpark range. An appraisal doesn’t necessarily mean the domain will sell for that much. I once had a domain that was appraised at ,000, it wasn’t even worth , and sold in auction at . I use Namebio to see what past domains have sold for though.

anyone has any idea how much regionsmortgage.net could worth? keep in mind that Regions is a bank, also they own regionsmortgage.com, do you think regions would want to buy it?thanks
mike
Hey Rex,Do you think Regions would want to buy it?
-
ANSWER:
It depends on how many people think of Regions bank for their mortgage needs, and would try to go to that URL. The .net hurts the potential value quite a bit. In my experience, a domain name like that would be worth about 1000-3000 USD. Of course, it always depends on how badly someone actually wants it.

rather than links / popularity / searches etc what is the use in buying such namesi saw sex888.com ~9000$ @sedo
i may buy sex887.com = 8.95$ [ i feel a scam like]
any body bought & sold domains also write pls.
-
ANSWER:
The operative phrase is “supply and demand”. people chase names that sound like the name of their business or product. Some go for keywords to help their search engine rankings.
I would not purchase a domain name under any circumstances. It’s just another form of “scalping” (Buying ball game tickets with the purpose of selling them at a higher price on the day of the match) and scalping is banned in my country. If nobody purchased domain names, the people who speculate with them would stop buying them also.sex887.com may mean something to you, but it means nothing to me or probably to anyone else for that matter. What’s wrong with sex-887.com? it’s currently free. Visit this site and chuck in a few ideas. You’ll eventually find something you don’t have to pay for (registration excluded). http://www.checkdomain.com/
Good luck

QUESTION:
I’m thinking about selling a marketing-related domain name. How can I maximize the sale price?
I own a domain name (which I won’t list here) that is related to buzz marketing. (It’s a fairly common two-word phrase, a .com, and there are no hyphens or numbers or anything that detracts from it.)I reserved it several years ago to use with my business, but only started developing a project for it in the last few months (though have nothing online yet). Recently, I was offered ,500 for it — completely out of the blue.
While I’m not yet sold on selling it (for any amount), I’m thinking pretty seriously about it. Can anyone suggest reliable appraisal services, domain brokers, auctions, or other resources to help me evaluate what I have and, should I choose to sell, maximize the return on my investment? Thank you!
-
ANSWER:
Having just recently started looking at the business of domain name selling, this is something I was recently researching. What I found is that Moniker.com seems to be the most professional of the domain name companies. They offer appraisal and auctioning services. Their appraisal service does cost money, but you’ll get a reliable estimate of how much your domain is currently worth.
Keep in mind that the value of a domain name involves:
1) The traffic the domain gets
2) The value of the name to a buyerIf the domain is undeveloped, then you’re basically looking at how important that particular domain name is to a buyer. This makes it harder to estimate the value. Moniker’s auction services allow for a reserve price to be set, so you could be assured you wouldn’t get less than that amount for the domain.
Good luck with the domain!

QUESTION:
Should I take an offer to buy a domain name that I own, and don’t plan to use?
I am a writer and for a hobby, come up with domain names I think would be appealing to businesses. As a little experiment I bought about six available domain names for each. I just got an offer from someone who saw one of the names parked on my domain dealer’s website so the offer would be binding. I got a market appraisal of the name that was 4X higher than the offer. What would be the best way to make a decision without going through a microanalysis of how to negotiate? (or SHOULD I go through some microanalysis – like market research, etc.)?-
ANSWER:
I’d just sell it.

Thank you,
Domain Trade LLC”Never heard of such a thing – is it possible?
-
ANSWER:
Short answer: yes, it is a scam.Check out my source for more information, it goes a lot further in depth, but here are a few excerpts:
“Spoiler Alert! “Domain Trade, LLC.” is a PHANTOM company!
However, “Domain Trade, INC.” DOES exist, and is in fact a Japanese company that was involved in a lawsuit over reverse domain hijacking (among other things), but is, to the best of my knowledge, not affiliated with this scam.”…
“There are a number of posts over on DomainNameWire.com, DotWeekly.com, and many others that talk about this particular variety of scam and I will list them all later, but for now I’ll summarize:
It’s apparently an old and very popular (read: effective) scam used against domain name owners. Essentially, the owner is approached (through e-mail) by someone claiming to be interested in purchasing their domain name; but not without validation of the domain’s market worth. So they’ll require an appraisal of the domain name before naming their bid; and they’ll even be so kind as to provide exactly what appraisal sites they’re willing to accept.
This is the scam part: only one, maybe two of the sites they list are legitimate. The others are either owned by the scammer, or they are a paid affiliate; and rest assured, their sites will be the cheapest.”
…
“Now, as I said, this scam makes it’s money through the appraisals that the owner pays for. I don’t know if the appraisals are bunk or not, but the MO seems to be that the owner will pay for an appraisal, send the results to the scammer, only to never receive a reply. See, they don’t really care about buying your domain, they just need you to pay for the appraisal and they have your money.
So here’s the deal, domains are like real estate, and just like real estate it is the BUYERS responsibility to research the value of the property they are interested in. If someone wants to buy your domain it is up to THEM to get an appraisal. In the end, appraisals are simply suggestions, they are not concrete. The final price comes down to negotiations between the buyer and seller and if the seller wants a few thousand more than what some expensive appraisal site says it’s worth, then that is their right as the owner of that domain.”
