Most domains will work without the www. prefix (for instance, my domain, digitalblackmedia.com, will work with or without the www).

Your web hosting company just has to configure their servers to, by default, route traffic to port 80 on the web hosting machine if no prefix is provided.

  16. QUESTION:
Is it ethical godaddy.com & domain.com to hold your domain name ransome?
I’ve been opening business for clients 12 yrs+ & this has happened to me as well as numerous customers over the years. You goto godaddy or domain.com & check your domain name. You check a few domain names you want and figure there’s no way these unusual names will be taken by the time you go back to save them. 3 weeks later you come back and each one of those name are taken by different entities and will sell to you now at a much higher PREMIUM!!

NEWSFLASH!!…they are all taken by the same site you just went to prev but surreptitiously under a subsidiary/connected company to godaddy.com or domain.com!!

How ethical is this? Is this type of underhanded sales-sneakiness legal?

    • ANSWER:
Greed is their priority, not people. I’ve no desire to use these websites because I’ve been warned about them that they do that before. You have to be careful.

Yahoo doesn’t seem to have these complaints so I go to their domain search. Link below:

  19. QUESTION:
How can i check if a company name has been take?
How can i check if a company name has been taken? if it has and i own the domain name for the particular name i want to own it does this give me rights?

    • ANSWER:
What does it matter if a name is taken. Unless your brand is aimed at taking advantage of another’s branding, you can name it the same thing. Jon MacDonald’s Hamber Hut would be a trademark infringement on McDonald’s, but Jon McDonald’s plumbing service would not, if your name was Jon McDonald.

  20. QUESTION:
How do I check to see if a name is already taken for a business?
You know how you can check to see if a domain name is taken? Well, I want to pick a name for the biz I’m starting up, and I want to see if it’s available.

    thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what’s out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free & a great place to start, so I’d try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending & registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I’m not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You’ll also want to check domain names & yellow pages, so simply do a search for “free domain name search” and “national yellowpages” and the appropriate links will pop up.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

  25. QUESTION:
What receipts do we get when we book a domain name through an internet company?
I have booked a domain name 2 days back through an internet company. I got no receipts till now. I see my name on the whois.com for this domain name. I emailed the internet company and no replies till now. I want to know what receipt I should have inorder to claim that this particular domain name is mine. Suppose tomorrow I opt for another company as my host then how do i tell them that this domain name is mine? By the way I made the payment for the domain name through a bank cheque.
Thanks for your answer. My doubt wasn’t whether the domain name i got is unique or not. Today I registered the domain name through one company. Right now i haven’t hosted my site. Now my doubt is how do i claim this domain name belongs to me or inother words how do i host my site using this domain name with another hosting company? I hope you understand my question.

    • ANSWER:
you only get one receipt and that would of been at the completion of your transaction and it would of been up to you to have printed it before you closed your confirmation,

Now as proof, domain names dont work like you are thinking they do. To get a domain name the name you have selected is serched on the world wide directory of domain names. You would not even gotten the domain name if there was a duplicate. It is impossible for you to get a duplicate, it is strictly inforced before you were even given the name. A domain name is translated to a numeral address. such as a made up one 201.234.84.897 it shows as a name but it is converted to the number when it communicates over the internet. So it is impossible for two same address to exist. the page would not display because over the internet the protocal would be corupted. You have nothing to prove to anyone, you own it, you use it, if you type in your domain name and it goes to your page, end of story. In short I tried to not be to technical version, I can break it down to bits and packets or binary if you want,,,, hehehehe

  26. QUESTION:

  28. QUESTION:
What is a computer domain name used for?
At the moment I use DynDNS and have a Computer Domain Name but I only use it to check my torrent with WebUI. What else can it be used for?

    • ANSWER:

      hi,
Each computer directly connected to the Internet has at least one specific IP address. However, users do not want to work with numerical addresses such as 194.153.205.26 but with a domain name or more specifically addresses (called FQDN addresses) such as www.commentcamarche.net.

It is possible to associate names in normal language with numerical addresses thanks to a system called DNS (Domain Name System).

This correlation between the IP addresses and the associated domain name is called domain name resolution (or address resolution).

how to register a domain name?
I’m trying to register a domain name for my website. When i type the domain address to check it’s availability, a page opens saying “this domain is not valid” .
And below is a message stating
“hosted by network solutions”. I would like to use that domain name. What should i do now?

    • ANSWER:
Surely, it is already registered by some one else…
Better you choose another domain name of your choice .

Mostly the address or phone number is visible on the page itself where you saw the message “hosted by network solutions”.May be at top right corner.

Or else you have a number of domain retailers for you at various prices.Try from them even….Some times you can get a better one than yours…

  33. QUESTION:
I bought a domain name and sold it for 15 times what I paid for it. Fluke?
I am pretty good with coming up with catchy titles. So for fun, I checked a list of for-sale domain names. Bought a cheap one, had an offer from someone who REALLY wanted it. Sold it for 15x the price. I didn’t ask why the person wanted it, but do you think this was just a fluke? I know there are all these sites that give suggestions on how to make a profit this way, but I see it more as an art form that can’t be taught. It doesn’t seem likely one can predict what domain name is going to just be the right one for a buyer. What do you think?

    • ANSWER:
Well a lot of people do this, so I don’t think its a fluke. Some domain registrars offer services to make this more automated.

Your browser has been hijacked by some sort of malware.

Try going to Internet Options and changing your home page. If that doesn’t work (e.g. the hijacked page reappears when you restart IE or reboot your computer) you will need to download and run a hijacker removal tool to remove the malicious program that’s causing the problem.

Please help. I want to set up a website, but the domain name i wanted is taken,?
I really want that particular domain name. Someone told me alot of good domain names like the one I am after are for sale. Please tell me how I can go about buying that domain name. I have checked by typing that domain name address, and it is not operation.

    • ANSWER:
      According to the link below:

      http://www.icann.org/compliance/faq.html

“The domain name I want is already registered by someone else. How do I go about obtaining this name?

If you are interested in obtaining a domain name that has been registered by somebody else, there are at least four alternatives:

      * Work out an agreement with the current registrant.

      * Wait and hope the current registrant lets it expire.

      * File a lawsuit in court against the current registrant.

      * If you believe the domain name is identical or confusingly similar to a trademark or service mark in which you have rights, and the current registrant has registered and is using the name in bad faith (and has no rights or legitimate interests in the name), you can begin an administrative proceeding under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy.

(Note: this is a narrow category, so you should proceed with caution.) For more details on this option, please see .

Before you decide which of these or other options is best in your case, you may want to consult an attorney. ICANN cannot give you legal advice.”

      A few things to expect:

      1. The registrant has full rights to the domain name.

      2. S/he doesn’t have to reply at all to begin with.

      3. If s/he does, s/he decides any figure s/he sees fit. S/he doesn’t have to justify him/herself to you, especially since you’re the one who wants it badly.

If nothing fruitful happens after some time, be ready to explore other options. Complaining about it might give you some degree of personal relief, but it’s still not going to get you what you really want.

      Be realistic. And good luck.

    • ANSWER:
I don’t see how you were able to buy a domain name that was not available.

At any rate, it is not possible to change your domain name without first canceling the current account. (And if you do cancel, Yahoo! will not refund your money or put it toward a new domain purchase.)

  42. QUESTION:
Which package of the Yahoo Web Hosting for owning a domain is the best?
Just receive a mail from Yahoo, offering .99/1year for a domain name. I also checked the website which offering another .99/first 3 years for a domain name. What is the different? How can I check? Which one is the best?

    Thank you very much

    • ANSWER:
You need to be careful if you get a domain with Yahoo. The .99 is only for the first year, and for the next year, they will automatically charge you credit card with the full amount (.95/year or something more).

It happened to me, so I would not want that to happen to you or anybody else. Their support is also poor so forget about getting back your money. The other offers on their website got the same trick around them. Don’t fall for them.

Just go get a domain from a registrar that doesn’t suck like Dotster: http://hostingsthatsuck.com/dotster-web-hosting-sucks

      or just go with Godaddy.

  43. QUESTION:

I’m thinking semi-seriously about starting a business online (partnering with a local retail store) After thinking about what to call the online business for a while, I came up with a name, and when I checked the domain registration, I found that it was already taken. However, the website there is an unused blog without any posts at all. As a result, the website doesn’t already get any traffic or show up on Google searches for the name.

I pinged the owner of the registration to see if she’d be open to selling it, and she said she is and that I should make her an offer.

The problem is, I have no idea how much to start with. 0? 0? 00? I don’t want to start so low that she doesn’t take me seriously, but I also don’t want to start so high that I could have offered much less.

    • ANSWER:
Start @ 0 and go from there.

  44. QUESTION:
About Web Domain Name Registration dispute?
I registered a domain name with some company, because of billing issue they did not get fees, They mailed about failure in charging me for thier fees. Today I called them; to request them to pay by cheque.

What they were telling is Domain name was sent to registrar and to retrieve my domain name; they told me that it is about 0. Unnessesarily I dont want or like to pay 120 dollars.

    What is your suggestion.

    • ANSWER:
I found the following summary on the internet.

      Hope this helps.

“There is a expiration process for domain names. During the first 30 days of expiration the owner can renew the domain name at current registration prices.

After the 30 day “grace period” the name will enter a 30 day “redemption period” during this time the name may be renewed by the owner for a “service fee”

Five days after the end of the redemption period the name will made available for anyone to register. I wouldn’t wait for this to happen, people buy expired domains every day and it could be difficult to get the name.

Unfortunately you are at the mercy of your registrar in this matter. The one thing you can check is your whois record at http://www.whois.sc if it still shows your registration information you may still be in the 30 day grace period. If this is the case contact your registrar with this information and maybe they will deal a little.

As a last resort you can contact http://www.icann.org they are the governing body that monitors domain names”

Now that I have a domain name what do i do?
I bought a domain name but now what?
I got it from namecheap.com and when i go the the website it just says “This domain was recently registered at namecheap.com. The domain owner may currently be creating a great site for this domain. Please check again later!”
what do I do now? This is my first time building a website.

    • ANSWER:
You need to make web site files and put them on a server computer. Then you need to link your domain name to that server’s address.

Usually you sign up for a web hosting service that provides you with tools for making the web files and uploading them to the server. There are lots of web hosting services, and namecheap.com probably offers hosting too.

Once the site exists on the server, there should be a way to link your domain name to the server’s network address from your namecheap.com account.

  49. QUESTION:
how to find out if a brand name is already being used or copyrighted or trademarked?
I know of a good way which is to search the name on good search engines and check if its already in use, or check by searching for domain names from domain name services.
But is there a worlwide database of brand names that are legally registered, where I can find online? A more assuring way to find out if the brand name I just thought of is already being used by other people or organisations.

Or also to find out whether certain words or names are copyrighted, for eg; darth, galactus, etc…

  50. QUESTION:
I received a call and an email asking to buy a domain name I created.?
I got a call from someone stating that he represented a company that produced editing software and they were creating product names and then searching to see if they already existed. I had a website, now defunct, that bore a name they wanted to use. I still own the domain name. They offered 0 for me to turn it over to them. No problem, but what sorts of things should I know in order to be sure it’s a legitimate deal and I’ll actually get a check? What would you do?

    • ANSWER:
first and foremost, get them to put their offer in writing. Have them mail you a paper contract that specifies how the transaction will happen, what your responsibilities are and what their responsibilities are. This does not have to be long and complicated, but it should not leave any important questions unanswered, i.e. like how and when you will receive payment. Be sure this includes verifiable contact information (i.e. physical as well as mailing address, if the two are different and the names of the people and companies you will be dealing with and how they relate to each other. For example, if an external consultant is the one talking to you about selling your domain name, be sure that he has authority of the company to make the purchase on their behalf. Also watch out for a “middle man” who has inside knowledge of a product this company wants to release and simply wants to grab your domain name so he can turn around and sell it for a huge profit. I personally do not know how you establish a “market price” for a domain name … this probably depends on the size of the company and how badly they want it. It might well be that 0 is a fair price … and if you try to bargain for more they might just move on … I have no idea. I also do not know if “cyber squatting” laws might apply since you say your site is “defunct”. I am sure 0 to get you to sell your claim to the domain voluntarily is much better deal than trying to battle you on this front … if they even have a claim (probably they do not since it sounds like the product naming phase is not yet complete)

If you want to be as safe as possible, take the offer (i.e. the contract that both you and the buyer will sign) to a lawyer and have him/her look it over. This will probably cost you between and but at least he can give you an independent evaluation of the deal from the legal perspective.
