      I’ve done this with my domain, I can give you a brief summary of what worked:

      1) Buy domain from Godaddy
      2) Create account with everydns.com for this domain
      3) Insert everydns name servers into godaddy domain information (ns1.everydns.com)
      4) Get a server or VPS
      5) Install and configure apache2, php and sql on server
      6) create A records on everydns pointing to server (ex> hyperport.net -> 178.18.17.77)
      7) Wait a few hours for DNS entry to populate around the servers of the internet

      And then you are forwarded to your webhost when you use the domain name.

      The 2 best (and I swear by them) are Go Daddy and PowWeb. Most of my sites are hosted by PowWeb (I know they were offering a special off their absurdly cheap prices, not sure if it’s still on). Just checked…yup it is .77 per month for a year + free domain name registration. In years I have seldom had any problems with them, and they fix it within minutes.

      Both have email and email fowarding, both are well established and I’m sure you will be very happy with either. I will say that PowWeb has a very helpful forum and better tech support. That’s why I kept my sites there (after a several hour call to GoDaddy over a simple problem). Both have easy FTP uploads (you will want this) and likely more resources than you will ever use. Just be careful about ripoff sites that cost much more…and give nothing more.
